Neurofeedback Therapy can be a valid form of therapy for adults and children with a history of severe abuse and neglect. In connection with the brain and its function, trauma is as an event or situation that has altered the perception of oneself and their place in the world. It could occur as the consequence of one particular incident, or it could be made up of numerous unhealthy events that happened time gradually. Trauma is classified into two categories; Hypervigilance (a heightened state of awareness, fight or flight reaction, causing inappropriate or even aggressive responses in everyday situations), and Freeze and Dissociation ( the brain will go into a ‘Freeze’ state of mind; a numbing or collapse response, causing the person to shut down physically and emotionally.) Also, trauma can frequently reveal itself as a combination of the two mentioned above, as the nervous system will shift between one and the other.
At the Eustache Institute, we treat adults and children who have suffered from child abuse and child neglect with the utmost care and kindness. We also understand that any treatment for those who have suffered from child abuse will take time, so we always ask their loved ones to be patient and supportive through the process. We also combine individual counseling sessions with Neurofeedback Therapy, as a way for our patients to open up when they are comfortable talking about their abuse, which is extremely important. These two therapies will work at a deep subconscious level, suspending the cycle of physical and mental injury and post-traumatic symptoms. By recognizing and training the areas of interest, we can help our patients change their brain patterns back into a natural, neutral and confident state.
